How important is wearing a sunscreen?
Did you know that for every blistering burn it doubles your chances of getting skin cancer? Although it is very important to wear sun protection year round, it is extremelyimportant to protect yourself during the summer. Don't be fooled thinking a tan hides blemishes. Acne gets worse 2 weeks later and blemishes will become darker. Always apply 30 minutes before sun exposure and reapply every 2 hours when in direct sun. Remember! No sunscreen is 100% protection, so avoid sun between the hours 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. or use clothing as protection. The sun is the major cause of premature aging and damage to your skin. If you're serious about healthy skin, use one of our sunscreens daily as part of your skin care regimen.

When is it important to protect the skin from the sun?
UV exposure is strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. It is also greatest in the summer,
at higher altitudes, and near the equator.
Up to 80% of the sun’s rays can penetrate light clouds, mist, and fog.
Fresh snow reflects back about 85% of the sun’s rays; water reflects back about 5%;
and concrete reflects back 10–12% of the sun’s rays.
Protecting your skin during the first 18 years of life can reduce the risk of some types of skin cancer by up to 78%.

How do sunscreen work?
The SPF provides an indication as to the amount of time that a user may
remain in the sun. The number following the SPF is the multiple of the
time that it takes for the average skin to burn. Everybody's skin is
different and burns at different times. For example, if it takes you 10
minutes for the skin to burn, and you use an SPF 15, you should not burn
for 150 minutes. Additionally, all sunscreens work differently so it is
good to have a combination of sunscreens. Up to SPF 30 is sufficient for
day to day use. Any SPF higher than 30 will only give an approximately
2-4% more protection while increasing the amount of potentially irritating
chemical ingredients by 50 percent.
15 minutes a day of sun exposure throughout your body is enough to
produce necessary Vitamin D.
Sunscreen Rules
1. Apply sunscreen at
least ¹-inch into the hairline, and remember the ears
2. After application,
allow 15-30 minutes before exposing the skin to the sun. It takes about
that time for the sunscreen to absorb and work properly
3. If in direct sun,
use a hat. SPF 30 is sufficient for maximum protection. Any SPF higher
than 30 runs the risk of the skin becoming irritated and sensitive.
4. Always use a full
spectrum sunscreen. Not all sunscreens are created equal. It is important
to have a UVA and UVB protection. UVA does not cause sunburn but, it can
penetrate deeper into the skin, and research links them to signs of aging
such as age spots. UVB is what causes blister type sunburns.
5. If in the water,
make sure the sunscreen is water-resistant. Always reapply after 80
minutes of being in the water.
6. Photoxic- If you
are on medications such as anti-biotics, Accutane or any photo-sensitive
constituents (oral or topical) must wear sunscreen at all times and avoid
direct sun.
